The back of the book reads “ Enjoy the pleasures to be had from even the smallest taste of organic living and feel good about what you can do, not guilty about what you can’t”. This book is fab! It is for ordinary people who will enjoy being able to pick and choose from the ideas that are proposed and is split into 3 sections (no garden, small garden or large garden). You don’t need to have rolling acres or a goat, but you may want both after reading this book. Every one of the suggestions is a self contained idea that you can try. It is likely to give you many ideas about what you could do next to change your life for the better in small but valuable ways.

Practical information including loads of diagrams and photographs about updating your existing home in an eco-friendly way. We have never known a Haynes Manual that was no good, and this one is no exception. We were wanting to insulate under our floor, but didn’t know whether we could use sheep’s wool or not. This book has shown us how to do it, and the table of possible materials that we could choose from includes wool. Sorted. Chapter headings include principles of eco-renovation, construction materials, reducing heat loss, heating, electricity demand, micro generation, water, interiors, waste and pollution, exterior spaces and gardens.

The Green Books Guide series of books are all worth looking out for, as they provide great introductions to aspects of eco-living. Printed on 100% recycled paper, which is a good start, this book covers an amazing range of subjects in addition to boilers, conservatories, washing machines, painting and flooring. Less skilful photography and more information than many of the other books in the series, this is a basic introduction but covers a wide enough range of issues to be of value. Well written and accessible to a range of readers, it should give enough information to the reader to enable them to ask the right questions when shopping for home improvements.

Book review (glide below)
We heard this guy speak at one of the seminars at the Grand Designs show at the NEC, and he was inspirational in advocating the use of good eco friendly products and designs. This book should give anyone starting out on their first house or redecorating an existing house many ideas. It is essentially a design book, and includes chapters such as colour, lighting, flooring, bathrooms, living spaces etc, but includes a chapter about greener homes. Well presented with tons of good ideas, backed up with excellent photography, showing that it is possible live both stylishly and with an eco conscience.
