I was so looking forward to reading this book, and it hasn’t disappointed. Matthew Wilson is a well known figure on TV and is responsible for the gardens at RHS Harlow Carr in Yorkshire, where many of the photographs for the book are taken from. I have begun to question the relevance of the advice in older gardening books, and this book hits the spot when considering up to date issues. Chapters include watering; planting styles; garden design; reuse, recycle, sustain and attracting wildlife. Practical projects are included such as making a green roof, and also information about issues such as sustainability. An inspiring read and a practical manual for the gardener of the future.

Ken Thompson writes incredibly well, and I was hooked from the first page. Wildlife gardening is a subject that I am wanting to learn more about and my own reading has led me to believe in a certain set of widely circulated rules or truths about what is the correct way to garden to attract beneficial life. This book challenges these truths with carefully researched and presented evidence. Chapters include information about composting, attracting wildlife in, what not to do, birds, and why all these matter. This could have been a really heavy going little tome, but instead is a refreshing, well written super little book that I can’t recommend highly enough.

This book has such good illustrations that it is worth the money for the laughs that the book provides, irrespective of whether you actually carry out any of the suggestions. Divided into sections tackling flying foes; furry invaders; slimy, slithery and scaly; creepy crawlies and the good guys. The one that made me laugh the most was the water pistol on the neighbourhood cats - I can really connect with that one. This book has the usual beer traps and scattered holly leaves, but also contains suggestions I have not heard before. The illustrations add a dimension that will make this little book appeal to non-gardeners and young people, who may well volunteer to do them on your behalf!

The Green Books Guide series of books are all worth looking out for, as they provide great introductions to aspects of eco-living. This book includes information about which composting system is best for you, where to site your new compost bin, what to put in it, and what to use the finished compost for. A section at the end gives an A-Z of specific items that you may wish to compost and tells you whether it is safe to add it or not. The coloured cartoon drawings add to the text, making it a suitable read for most ages over age 7.

Bob Flowerdew is a well respected horticulturalist with many years’ experience of organic gardening. This book covers a basic introduction to what companion planning is, then moves on to covering in-depth areas of the garden including the ornamental garden and the productive garden. Also included are chapters about how plants have become companions and folklore associated with companion planting. Each subsequent edition (this is the 5th) includes more and more updated information. This seems to be a constantly evolving area of gardening knowledge as the organic movement catches on and people try to live more harmoniously with nature.
